First published in 1845, The Raven is noted for its musicality, stylized language, and supernatural atmosphere. Throughout the poem, Poe makes allusions to folklore and various classical works. The poem was inspired in part by a talking raven in the novel Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty by Charles Dickens.
Originally appearing in The New York Mirror, it was soon reprinted, parodied and illustrated; it remains one of the most famous poems ever written. In this classic video, Vincent Price brings life (and death) to Poe's poetic soliloquy.
